Sometimes. You need written consent if the tree has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) on it, sits in a designated Architectural Conservation Area, or is covered by a planning condition. Outside those cases, most trees in a private garden can be removed without permission — but under the Forestry Act a felling licence can be required for trees outside an urban area or garden. We check the Wicklow County Council register and advise you before any work starts, at no charge.

It depends on height, species, access and what's underneath the tree. A small garden tree with good access is at the low end; a large mature tree that has to be rigged down over a conservatory takes a full day and a bigger crew. We don't publish flat prices because they'd be misleading — instead you get a free site visit and a fixed written quote that includes labour, machinery, waste removal and insurance, valid for 30 days.

Uninsured tree work is the single biggest risk to a homeowner: if something goes through your roof or your neighbour's, it becomes your problem.

Nothing goes to landfill. Brash is chipped on site and taken away for mulch, or left with you if you want it for beds and paths. Usable timber is cut to firewood lengths — we can leave it stacked for you or take it away, whichever you prefer. Just tell us at quote stage.

Most tree work can be done year round, but there are two things to note. Under the Wildlife Act it's an offence to cut hedges or roadside vegetation between 1 March and 31 August, and we're legally required to check for active nests before any work in the nesting season. Structural pruning is generally best in the dormant winter months, while light summer pruning suits fruit trees. Emergencies, obviously, get dealt with whenever they happen.

In Ireland you're generally entitled to cut back branches that cross your boundary, back as far as the boundary line but no further — and the cuttings technically belong to your neighbour. In practice, a conversation first saves a lot of grief, and if the tree is protected the usual consent rules still apply. We're happy to look at it and explain your options; we won't put a saw into a disputed tree without the situation being clear.
